Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, has backed a campaign by countryside charity CPRE to increase the country's hedgerow network by 40% by 2050.
The local MP is one of 82 'Hedgerow Heroes' in Parliament and has a background in farming after previously working on a farm so has a keen interest in this area.
The UK hedgerow network in its expanse is our largest nature reserve. The unique environmental, economic, and social benefits of our hedgerows make them essential key workers of our countryside. But around half our hedgerows have been lost since the end of the Second World War - leaving us vulnerable to the threats of climate change and air pollution, while intensifying nature’s decline.
Ben Everitt MP said: "Hedgerows are vital in providing food and shelter for animals, supporting jobs and livelihoods and for combatting climate change so I hope we see the Government set an ambitious target for increasing our hedgerow network.
"I know how hard our farmers in Milton Keynes work to put food on our tables and I will continue to work with them and listen to them on the issues that are stopping them from being as productive as they could be."
