Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, has spoken in the House of Commons to call for a reinsurance scheme which would give the events industry the confidence it needs to re-open.
The local MP has previously written to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to support local events venues which have been struggling throughout the pandemic.
And speaking following an Urgent Question in the House of Commons this afternoon (22/06), Ben asked DCMS Minister Nigel Huddleston if he agreed a reinsurance scheme would be the boost the £84 billion industry needs.
Ben said: "Does the Minister agree with me that this industry worth £84 billion a year really deserves the confidence of a reinsurance scheme and further it's a vote of confidence in Global Britain and a vote of confidence in our vaccine scheme?"
Minister Huddleston responded: "My Honourable Friend's absolutely right, this is a hugely important sector to our economy which employs 1.5 million right up and down the country. There are whole households that rely on this - exactly why we've got the Events Research Programme to try and build the confidence so we can get this sector up and running again and we will be looking at alternative ways we can continue to support the sector including indemnity."
