Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, is encouraging local schools to sign up to take part in the #LetGirlsPlay 'Biggest Ever Football Session' this March.
Following an historic 18 months in which the Lionesses have become EURO champions and World Cup finalists, there has been transformational growth in girls’ football in England.
In 2020, The FA set an ambitious target for 75% of schools to deliver equal access to football in PE lessons by 2024. Outside of school, there has also been a 39% increase in the number of female youth teams since 2021.
On Friday 8th March, the third annual #LetGirlsPlay Biggest Ever Football Session will be taking place in schools across England. Participation has been increasing year-on-year with 285,000 girls taking part in 2023 – a significant increase on the 90,000 that took part in the inaugural event in 2022.
As in previous years, the aim is to get as many girls as possible to all play football on the same day in schools across the country. This could be at lunchtime, in a lesson or after school and a number of schools across Milton Keynes North have already signed up to get involved.
Slated Row and the Radcliffe School, both in Wolverton, will be taking part, while Olney Middle School have also signed up for the event.
Ben Everitt MP said: "I'm delighted that Slated Row, Olney Middle School and Radcliffe have already signed up to take part in this exciting event but I hope even more schools from across Milton Keynes will get involved and give girls access to football.
"Our very own local superstar and England captain Leah Williamson has been inspirational for young girls across Milton Keynes and her hometown of Newport Pagnell but there's still more to do to inspire the next generation and #LetGirlsPlay's Biggest Ever Football Session' is a great place to start."
