Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, has been successful in supporting the safety of students at Oakgrove School after the council had closed an underpass used by students daily.
Oakgrove School contacted the local MP after Milton Keynes City Council shut the underpass under Chaffron Way for essential works. Despite schools being closed over the Christmas period, the work did not begin until Monday 9th January, when schools had returned from the festive break.
The closure led to concerns that young people would instead choose to cross a busy grid road on their way to and from school. Both Oakgrove School and Ben Everitt MP were considered about the considerable danger this posed so Ben got in touch with the council.
Following the complaint the council accepted the safety concerns and have confirmed the underpass will now remain open and the beginning and end of the school day, and that no work will take place during those times.
Ben Everitt MP said: "I'm pleased that after working closely with Oakgrove School and subsequently raising this issue with the council they have now realised their mistake and opened the underpass for students to use.
"It's incredibly concerning such a lack of thought was put into these works. We must ensure the safety of students across Milton Keynes."
