Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, has shared his delight after the Government provided more than £2 million funding for Milton Keynes Council to prevent homelessness in the city.
The Government’s Homelessness Prevention Grant will support households in England who are homeless or at risk of losing their home. Councils will use the funding to help them find a new home, access support for unexpected evictions and secure temporary accommodation where needed.
Today's £2 million funding also includes money to support people forced into homelessness by domestic abuse which is a key personal point for Ben who co-sponsored an amendment to the Domestic Abuse Bill last year which ensured victims of domestic abuse were given a “priority need” for assistance with housing.
Ben commented: "I'm extremely proud of the work we did with Crisis and other homelessness charities last year to get priority housing status for domestic abuse victims written into the Domestic Abuse Bill and it's wonderful to see it in action right here in Milton Keynes.
"Nobody should ever have to choose between staying in an abusive household or being homeless so it was absolutely the right thing to do and I'm glad the Government listened."
